It’s good to get one’s political philosophy from Ayn Rand. One can certainly do much worse.
I’ve only read some of Atlas Shrugged, but I have read Ayn Rand’s nonfiction books. Former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan wrote the essay “Gold and Economic Freedom” ( https://www.webcitation.org/5y4tJx5u2 ) for Rand’s Objectivist newsletter, which is reprinted in Rand’s book Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal. But unfortunately, Greenspan sold himself out to the powers that be.
Regarding Rand herself and her role in the libertarian movement, you might be interested in the book It Usually Begins With Ayn Rand by Jerome Tuccille, which concerns how indebted the libertarian movement is to Rand. I haven’t read the book myself, but Tuccille’s book on Donald Trump was a New York Times best-seller when it originally came out.
Collectivists like to act like women feature prominently within their history, but really it’s the libertarians who have the best claim on women making significant contributions to their intellectual history. Of course there is Ayn Rand, who is perhaps responsible for more people knowing about libertarian ideas than anyone else, but there is also Wendy McElroy, Linda Tannehill, Rose Wilder Lane, Isabel Paterson, Claire Wolfe, and other women who have been major figures in the libertarian movement.
Congressman Ron Paul has a picture of Ayn Rand on his congressional office wall, in addition to pictures of Murray N. Rothbard, Ludwig von Mises (who is the principal economist Rand got her economic ideas from), and Friedrich von Hayek.

I have just one problem with Rand’s philosophy and that is the rational leaves little room for the spiritual ,since her main theme is the rational mind. She would consider me irrational. She is said to be a “watered down” Nietzsche. Both though, embraced the virtue of selfishness and considered altruism as a load of rubble. They pretty much unveils this hypocrisy of altruism hiding within a self serving agenda.
